Mother shocked to run into son’s killer while shopping

The mother of a 23-year-old Clay County man killed in a fiery crash in April said she was shocked when she saw the man accused of killing her son in a store over the Thanksgiving holidays.

Donna Conroy said she had a panic attack after seeing Clifford Ringer in a retail outlet around Thanksgiving.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Ringer rear-ended 23-year-old Gavin Conroy while Conroy was stopped at a red light. The man’s fuel tank ruptured and ignited, burning over 90% of Conroy’s body.

Ringer was driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash and was originally held without bond.  However, after his bond was reduced, he bonded out of jail last week.

Donna Conroy said the State Attorney’s Office assured her she would be notified if the defendant was released. Conroy said the office did not tell her Ringer was released.
