Orange Park delays lowering speed limits

Town of Orange Park council members voted to table a proposal to increase speed limits on some of the town’s streets.

According to a staff report, a resident on Stafford Drive claimed that the 15 MPH limit on that street is unenforceable and is causing confusion. The staff report added that according to state law, the default speed limit within municipalities is 30 MPH but may be lowered after an engineer’s traffic study is completed.

A traffic study by Buckholz Traffic recommended raising the 15 MPH limit to 25 on Stafford Drive, Egremont Drive, Morgan Street and San Robar Drive.

The study also recommended raising the 15 MPH limit to 20 on Oak Court, Sylvan Chase Drive, Wells Landing Drive, Anna Avenue, Morgan Circle East and Morgan Circle North.

Several Stafford Drive residents argued that the limit should remain at 15 or increased only to 20, adding that increasing the limit to 25 would endanger children living in the area.
